Disrespect is the act of indicating to somebody that you do not want to include them or that you won’t treat them as well as they seem to deserve.
I broke all sorts of protocols when I ran across the dock and dove into the lake without asking the lifeguard’s permission and without a swimming buddy. The head of the waterfront was furious and banished me from swimming for the rest of the day. Abashed and regretful, I came back to him an hour later with a sincere apology, and to my surprise he forgave me. It was an important lesson in showing respect to others; I have never forgotten the power of an earnest apology.
Even with the best of intentions, it is easy for us to end up disrespecting others—especially because disrespect can mean different things to different people.
