Nervousness is a natural, common stress response to perceived or actual threat in our environment. How can we best cope with the inevitable moments of nervousness in our lives?
And yet, standing in my city’s biggest food hall, fresh from a shower and ready for some dinner, I still found myself feeling… nervous. Only after my date arrived, and we had hugged, found our food, and settled down to get to know each other, did my nerves start to settle. The rest of the date went fine, and looking back, I was able to see my nervousness as just a natural part of meeting somebody for the first time in what felt like a high-stakes situation. (Months later, with many dates behind me, more of that pressure has dissipated, and so has the nervousness.)
It made sense that I was nervous in that moment because nervousness is inseparable from many of the moments in our lives that really matter to us. But even if we should feel nervous at times, that doesn’t mean we have to simply endure it. Let’s look at what psychology research can tell us about what nervousness is and how to deal with it.
