Hopefully, this guide will make it easier for you to research and decide which products you want to buy to make your life healthier. |

Healthy Fabrics and Clothing ProductsAlthough many people are aware of the chemicals in food and bath products, many people are unaware of the chemicals in fabrics—fabrics that touch their skin almost 24/7 through their clothing, towels, sheets, blankets, etc... That's why products for health include natural fiber clothing.
Watch the video below to learn more about synthetic fibers and why avoiding them is a good choice for good health. So we know that many fabric products made of plastic, synthetic fibers are unhealthy. But how do we avoid them? The answer? By replacing them with plant-based or animal-based fiber products, like cotton, silk, wool, and rayon.
Here are some healthy products that get your closet and bedroom into better shape. Healthy Products for Your BedroomWe all spend 8 hours per day touching our bedding fabrics. So making sure that those fabrics are healthy is essential.
1. 100% Cotton SheetsBuy it on Amazon
Most of us still have cotton sheets. Phew! But just in case you don't, this is another really important product. You spend around 8 hours per night touching your sheets. Making sure you choose a healthy product goes a long way. 2. 100% Cotton ComforterBuy it on Amazon
I always used to wonder why I'd wake up sweaty in the middle of the night. It turns out it's because by old comforter was made of synthetic fibers. It was like sleeping under a sheet of plastic as far as my body was concerned. This never happens to me anymore now that I have this goose down, cotton comforter. I also bought this cotton cover for it to keep it clean, but it's not required. 3. 100% Cotton Pillows (and Pillow Covers)Buy it on Amazon
Have you ever bought a new pillow and it stinks? That is the chemical smell. So I'm always sure to get cotton, hypoallergenic pillows. Gotta keep the face healthy even while I sleep. I also bought these cotton pillow covers. 4. 100% Cotton Blankets (for the Couch and Bed)Buy it on Amazon
I don't know about you, but I spend a lot of time on the couch in front of the TV. When I started cleansing my house of plastic, I realized my favorite couch blanket was 100% nylon (and unhealthy fabric). Perhaps even worse, my entire couch is made of synthetic fiber. And by law, couches must be coated in flame retardant, an unhealthy chemical. Ugh. So my husband bought me a huge couch blanket that I could both sit on and throw over myself while hanging out on the couch. 5. 100% Cotton TowelsBuy it on Amazon
Who knew that towels are now often made of polyester cotton blends!? I didn't... until I looked at the tag of my old set of towels. I immediately replaced them with cotton towels. They're super soft and healthier for my skin. I also throw one of these cotton towels over my desk chair since my chair is made of synthetic fibers. Healthy Clothing ProductsIn addition to bedding products, the fibers in our clothes can affect our health.
6. 100% Cotton SocksBuy it on Amazon
Ok. Well, having no elastic (which is plastic) in your socks does kinda suck. They slide down and don't fit super snuggly. I feel like having snug socks keeps me happy at the gym, which is super important for health, so I have a mix of socks—some 100% cotton and some that still have a small amount of elastic in them. 7. 100% Cotton SweatshirtsBuy it on Amazon
It couldn't believe it when I found out my "cotton" hooded sweatshirt was actually 50% polyester. It seems that men's hoodies are more often cotton so I bought this men's hoodie to wear around the house and around town. 8. Laundry detergent without harmful chemicalsBuy it on Amazon
Let's say you've done all the work and purged yourself of products made of harmful fabrics. But then you wash all your clothes in chemicals between wearing them. Well then all of that cotton is just covered in chemicals anyway. Instead, try using detergents free and clear of dyes and chemical fragrances. A Few More Healthy Clothing Products for WomenSorry lads. I have a bit more knowledge of women's clothing products for health, so here are few more healthy product suggestions for the ladies.
9. Fair Indigo Organic Cotton ClothingBuy it on Amazon
It's painfully hard for women to find professional-looking clothing that is made of 100% cotton. That's why I was thrilled when I discovered Fair Indigo cotton clothing. It's a bit pricy for me, so I just have a few pieces that are super soft, professional looking, and none of them are made of unhealthy plastic materials. Here is another article with more healthy clothing brands. 10. Wool Sweater CoatBuy it on Amazon
I did a lot of research before choosing to buy a wool sweater coat. Cotton seemed impractical for a winter coat, but the regular wool coats have a plastic lining (and they are too hot for my climate anyway). So I'm officially trying our this wool sweater coat this year instead of my old polyester coat. It's pretty, but I haven't really gotten to test it out yet. 11. Mostly Cotton BrasBuy it on Amazon
Sheesh it's hard to find a cotton bra! I settled for cotton sports bras, but honestly, I'm hopeful that some sexier cotton bras come on the market in the near future. 12. Mostly Cotton Gym PantsBuy it on Amazon
It kills me when I go to the gym and see healthy, active, fit people dressed from head to toe in spandex. A healthier product choice is breathable cotton. Now, I haven't been able to find 100% cotton gym pants too often, so I have settled for these, which Amazon says are 92% cotton. So they still have a bit of stretch to them. 13. 100% Cotton Tank Top ShirtsBuy it on Amazon
I wear cotton tank tops pretty much everywhere except to work. They're cheap, easy, and super comfy. 14. Pashmina or Rayon Summer ScarfBuy it on Amazon
I live in a climate with chilly summers, so a super warm scarf just won't do most of the time. Instead, I opted for Rayon. Rayon is still made of plant fibers, but rayon has to undergo more processing and treatment before it become fabric. You can also find summer scarfs made of pashmina (wool) and silk if rayon doesn't fit your idea of a healthy lifestyle. 15. Cashmere Winter ScarfBuy it on Amazon
Of course, a light silk scarf won't do you much good if it's blizzarding out. For cold winters, I opted for something a bit more heavy duty, made of cashmere. |
Products for a Healthy BodyIt turns out that in addition to the fabrics on our skin, there are tons of chemicals in our home—chemicals that can harm our health, hurt our kids, and even cause cancer.
We know that reducing the number of chemicals in our homes is good for our health, but we just don't know how to do it.
To start, let's take a look at how to remove products made from harmful plastics and replace them with healthier alternatives. Healthy Products for Your Hair and Body1. Organic Shampoo and ConditionerBuy it on Amazon
I'll always loved Avalon Organics. I tried a few other organic shampoos before going back to this one because the other ones irritated my scalp. This is the only shampoo I've found that doesn't feel or smell chemically. 2. Healthy Body SoapBuy it on Amazon
There are lots of healthy soaps, soaps that don't include parabens and other cancer-causing chemicals. I've tried many brands but have settled on Bali Soap. It feels so gentle and has such a subtle scent that it's become one of my favorite products. 3. Healthy Hand SoapBuy it on Amazon
There are more and more healthy brands of hand soap as well. I've tried a bunch but my favorite product is currently Myers Soap. 4. Healthy DeodorantBuy it on Amazon
Most people use gland clogging chemicals under their arms every day. That just can't be good for our health. That's why I used the deodorant crystal. It's 100% chemical free. I will admit, it's not for everyone, and I have tried other healthy deodorants. But I always go back to the crystal. 5. Healthy LotionsBuy it on Amazon
After growing up in a dry dessert climate, I have become addicted to using lotion. But I didn't want to rub gross chemicals all over my body everyday. I've used a few different healthy lotions, but always go back to Alba, scent-free lotion. 6. Natural Baby PowderBuy it on Amazon
It's so important for your health not to use regular baby-powder, on you or your baby! Johnson and Johnson just paid millions in settlement fines to people who were able to convince a jury that baby powder caused their cancer. So if you need baby powder, get a natural brand. 7. Healthy Hair GelBuy it on Amazon
I'll be honest. I don't love the healthy hair gels I've tried. Without all the chemicals, they don't work as well. But I'm just not willing to risk my health, so I use Alba's hair gel products. Hopefully I'll find a better hair product one day. 8. Healthy Toothpaste9. Healthy MouthwashBuy it on Amazon
Some suggest that rinsing your mouth with neem is a healthy alternative to traditional mouthwash. 10. Healthy Bath Products in Travel SizesPersonally, I never use the free mini-shampoo or soap products they offer at hotels. I don't know what's in it. That means I have to get all my healthy bath products in travel sizes to bring with me on trips. It's not easy. For some products, I'll just poor from my bigger bottle into a little bottle. And for other products, they sell them in travel size.
Here are a couple of healthy options in travel sizes: A Few More Healthy Bath Products for WomenIn addition to regular bath products, women are exposed to chemicals from feminine products. Here's how to root them out.
11. Feminine Products like the Diva CupBuy it on Amazon
Who knows how many chemicals are in pads and tampons. Save your body exposure to these chemicals by investing in a Diva Cup or Cotton Pads. 12. Healthy PerfumeBuy it on Amazon
Solid Perfume made with natural fragrances can help you avoid other harsh chemicals that are often in sprays. 13. Healthy Body Hair RemovalBuy it on Amazon
Many of us do some sort of hair removal, and if we're not careful we end up using all sorts of unhealthy products to get the job done. Instead of waxing, you can use natural sugar paste to remove hair. It's basically just honey and lemon. 14. Healthy MakeupBuy it on Amazon
There has been a lot more talk about swapping out unhealthy makeup from products that are free of harsh additives. I don't wear a ton of makeup, so you can learn more about healthy makeup brands in this article. |
Products for a Healthy and Safe HomeIn addition to the harmful chemicals in our bath products, food, and fabrics, there are other hidden unhealthy products in our homes.
How can we make our homes healthier? By swapping out products with chemicals, or made of plastics.
1. Water FilterBuy it on Amazon
I clean my water with a filter but I don't like the idea of the filtered water sitting in plastic all day, so I filter my water into a giant glass jar. It's a huge pain the the but, but until they make a water filter with a glass jug, it'll have to do. 2. Glass Food Storage ContainersBuy it on Amazon
We can buy all the healthy food we want, but if we store it all in plastic containers, toxins can still get into our food. Try glass storage containers instead both for your leftovers and for your shelf goods like rice and beans. I also bought silicone container lids to replace the plastic lids on these storage containers. And I use mason jars to store grains, beans, and herbs. 3. Glass Cups and PlatesIt turns out that those colorful dishes you have might have traces of lead or cadmium in them that could potentially leak into your food. This is why I donated my old dish set from Target and bought glass plates, bowls, and glasses. As a bonus, they don't break as easily.
4. Healthy Food WrappersBuy it on Amazon
Sometimes I'll eat half of an apple or want to save a slice of pizza and don't want to wrap it in plastic or tin foil. So I use biodegradable food wraps. I also have these cloth sandwich bags to take sandwiches to work. 5. Healthy CookwareThere has been some concern about the negative health effects of non-stick coating on pans. So I just avoid them all and have a set of iron and stainless steel pans for cooking.
6. Glass Blender and Food ProcessorsBuy it on Amazon
I desperately wanted a NutriBullet blender because I make smoothies all the time. Alas, I can't find one that is plastic-free. So I just stick with my glass blender that I've had for like 10 years. 7. Healthy Cleaning ProductsCleaning products are notorious for having unhealthy chemicals. So which home cleaning products do you use instead? Here's some ideas:
Myers multi-surface cleaner concentrate
Myers multi-surface cleaner spray Myers surface scrub Myers dish soap Plastic-free sponges 8. Bamboo Silverware HolderBuy it on Amazon
I used to keep my silverware in a plastic holder and have since switched to trying to keep plastic away from anything that comes near food products. 9. Stainless Steal Tea Kettle10. Stainless Steel Lunch BoxBuy it on Amazon
I'll often bring leftovers with me when I need to bring lunch to work. And my favorite way to do so is with a tiffin lunch box. It's a fun and fantastic plastic-free product and it keeps me eating healthier. |
