While on vacation in the mountains, I came across a book about enlightenment on the bookshelf. Although I had zero interest in spirituality—and had been an atheist all of my life—I read the book (The Power of Now, by Eckhart Tolle) and headed home without giving it much thought. When I got home, something felt different. It was subtle at first, but it quickly intensified, turning my entire life upside down. I had stumbled into awakening by accident. After bouncing around for a while, I eventually discovered that there are four stages between awakening and enlightenment. According to Buddhist texts, we have to move through all four stages of enlightenment to reach full enlightenment. |
Although we may have heard about the peace and bliss of full enlightenment (or the fourth stage of enlightenment), most of us have not heard much about the first three stages of enlightenment. In these stages, it is common to feel quite lost, lonely, and disoriented. Many of us will face challenges that we didn’t even know were possible. And some of us will even long for the days before we woke up.
So, as soon as I figured out what was happening to me, I began writing about my experiences.
In this book, I map out the path through all four stages of enlightenment, providing exercises to increase clarity at each stage and pointing to insights that help you keep moving forward.
It is my hope that, having walked this path myself, I can better guide you on your own journey.
If you want a guide that helps you navigate the often-complex awakening journey, helping you actually move beyond suffering, then this is the book for you.
