Is your brain making you unhappy?
A funny thing about our brains. Our brains make things up and fill in the gaps when we don’t have complete information. This means that ambiguous situations – situations which could be positive or negative – can be misinterpreted depending on how our brains are wired.
For example, let’s say that a friend at work tells you that John was talking about you by the water cooler. If you brain tends towards the negative, you might think John was saying bad things about you. If it’s wired towards the positive, you might think John was saying nice things about you.
You can imagine that if you live your whole live thinking that ambiguous situations are negative you’re likely to drum up a lot of excess negative emotions that are not necessary. And if you see these situations as positive,
You can create a lot of positive emotion, basically out of thin air.
So next time you are reacting to something, anything, ask yourself, is it ambiguous? Am I reacting to something that actually happened or to something that only happened in my brain? Question these reactions then try to reinterpret the situation with a positive slant.
