What is accountability?Accountability is an agreement plus an action. It's when a person accepts responsibility for their actions and decisions. Accountability means that a person willingly steps up to do what they know needs to be done, and they don't blame or point fingers when something doesn't get done. Basically, we say we're going to do something an we do it.
Of course, everyone makes mistakes and none of us are accountable all the time. But when we're accountable, we take ownership of our lives and meet the expectations we set for ourselves. Why accountability is so hardThere are all sorts of reasons why we might not do what we say we're going to do. Some of these include fear of failure, laziness, or just a lack if interest in the goal we've set for ourselves. But when it comes to wellness, we seem to have an especially hard time staying accountable. We may be afraid of failing, be tired, and not 100% care about the goals we've set for ourselves. So it's tough.
One of the ways you'll have an easier time sticking to your happiness goals is by telling other people what your goals are. Because you are not likely to want to let your friend down, you may be more likely to work on your goal. Find an accountability buddyIn addition to telling people about our wellness goals, we can ask someone to hold us accountable. Tell a friend what you're trying to do and ask them to check in with you to make sure you've actually done what you intended to do.
Message your friend on Facebook, send an email, or give someone a call. I know it can be tough (we're afraid we wont do it and then we'll look bad). But that is exactly the point. Our fear of embarrassment can out-weight our fear of actually doing the thing we said we'd do. So give it a try and see if it helps you reach your goals more easily. |
